Meet the Team

Nhongo Safaris™ is an independent Safari Operator specialising in small group safaris for families and individuals as well as offering safaris for larger groups. Nhongo Safaris™ was founded by Dean and Verity Cherry, who have been in the tourism industry since 1999 and have a great love for the African bush as well as Africa's wildlife and natural heritage.

We are an owner run company, and pride ourselves on offering efficient, friendly and professional service to our guests with flexible itineraries and excellent rates. Allow us to share our enthusiasm and knowledge of the Kruger National Park with you.

We aim to meet and exceed the expectations of our guests, while keeping costs reasonable and maintaining the highest standard of service and attention to detail. We love what we do and aim to do it well. Our guides we employ, are all well qualified and handpicked by us and are all accredited with THETA (The Tourism, hospitality, sports education , and training authority) FGASA (Field guides association of South Africa) DEAT ( Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism). Our ranger guides are all knowledgeable and experienced in birding, wildlife photography and have a vast knowledge of the African bush which all help to make your South African safari a memorable experience.

Nhongo Safaris™ prides itself in being able to offer fully guided Open Vehicle Safaris departing from Johannesburg or Pretoria on a daily basis with a minimum of four passengers. We are able to offer overnight safaris from a two night to a seven night at excellent rates.

Nhongo Safaris™ also operate their own fleet of VW Microbusses, Toyota Quantum Busses, Toyota Fortuner SUV's and Totota Hilux Pickups for transfers to and from the Kruger National Park as well as six Open Safari Vehicle ten seater trucks for your game viewing pleasure. All our vehicles carry the relevant Passenger and Public Liability insurances as well as Road Transport Permits as set out by the Tourism Industry Act, NPTR (National Passenger Transport Regulator) and SATSA (Southern African Travel Services Association).

Managing Director and qualified Game Ranger

Dean has been working in the greater Kruger National Park and the Kruger National Park for the last twenty years. His passion is the bush and he has insurmountable knowledge when it comes to the fauna, flora and mammals found in the Kruger National Park. Dean hates to be stuck in an office so you will normally find him conducting one of your safaris as he is a hands on man. Dean is also Vice Chairman of SATSA Mpumalanga Chapter, and puts a lot of time into growing the SATSA membership base in the province, thereby helping bring awareness to the South African Tourism Industry in the benefits of been a SATSA member.

Office and Administration Manager

All Administration duties and day to day running of Nhongo Safaris™ including all Marketing decisions for the company and when needed backup guide for the Kruger National Park. Verity is also the head Chef for our larger groups who prefer to have their meals prepared under the stars instead of eating in the camps restaurants.

Director Social Media

Kerilouise in charge of all queries and Reservations for the Kruger National Park as well as Reception duties. Kerilouise is busy with her Business Management Diploma on a part-time basis. She is also in charge of all Day Safari Bookings and the Co-ordination of vehicles and guides for these safaris. She would love to be able to fit in her guide's license in order to be able to drive an Open Safari Vehicle.

Sean in charge of all bookings and queries that come through to the office as well as all finances he reports to Verity . Sean is busy with his Business Management Diploma and is currently studying his National Field Guides License.

Gert has been guiding for the past 11 years, he strives to offer fulfilling, informative and enjoyable safari experiences in an environmentally responsible and ethical manner. Birding, wildlife, Photography, nature and the protection of the environment and natural resources are his true passion and priorities.

Kara’s dream to become a field guide started developing when she spent every July holiday in the African Bush with her family, learning to appreciate everything from small to big. Kara has been a qualified guide for the past 6 years and has a big interest in birds, photography and sharing how everything you see comes together.

Cedric has spent the last 12 years in the nature guiding ind ustry. He has a great passion for nature in all its facets and tries to learn as much as he can about wildlife, plant and tree species. He takes pride in sharing his knowledge with h is guests in the hope that they fall in love with the bush just as he has .

Field Guide

Robbie Started his passion for the African bush and in particular Kruger at a young age whilst being on many visits with his folks to areas throught the Kruger National Park. Employed at Sabi Sabi in Greater Kruger from 1995 saw him beginning a career which has totalled 19 years of safari experience. Robbie has particular expertise in animals and bird behaviour with a special fondness for tracking Krugers leopards. He takes being a peoples person as a priority in combination with expecting the unexpected ensuring a memorable safari experience for the Kruger visitor.

Field Guide

Amanda is originally from the UK but her love for wildlife brought her to South Africa 12 years ago where she started her studies.

Amanda has a “young at Heart” approach to life and guiding which makes her very approachable and fun to be around, her sense of humor and passion for nature will contribute greatly to your safari experience.

Freelance Field Guide

Lucky has been a guide for 11 years. He has vast experience as a trained and qualified field guide. Lucky used to work inside the Kruger National Park working for different camps like Punda Maria, Paul Kruger Gate, Orpen Gate and Skukuza. He has a very good personality and loves what he does.

Open Safari Vehicle Chauffer

Jan assists Shannon with the driving of the open safari vehicles in the Kruger National Park. He has a great interest in wildlife and nature and is currently learning all about the animals and their habitats, he would one day like to do his guiding’s license.

Dez does the transporting of guests to and from the Kruger National Park. He is easygoing and is always ready to assist when needed. Dez has a love for Nature and Wildlife and enjoys going on a Game drive in the Park whenever possible.

Oupie assists Dez in the transporting of guests from Johannesburg and Pretoria to Nelspruit and surroundings. Oupie is a positive hardworking man who loves to meet new people from all over the world and enjoys a good conversation with his guests who are going on a Kruger Safari.

Phalaborwa Branch Office Manager

Ntsako has joined us as our office manager at our Phalaborwa Branch and has a great passion for the Kruger National Park. She has a NQF level 6 with a National Diploma in Tourism and Tourism Management and has worked in various areas of Tourism.

She is always available to welcome guests to our office at the Phalaborwa Airport before departing on safari to the Kruger National Park.

Cleaning Stafff

Patrick has worked for the company for 10 years and is in charge of all maintenance around the office and he also takes care of our Vehicles with regards to general maintenance and cleanliness before our busses depart for their pickups in the morning.

Prisca has worked for Nhongo Safaris for 9 years now and she is our tea lady and makes sure our Offices are always in good order, as we begin our days work. Both Patrick and Prisca are very enthusiastic about the Toursim Industry and will be furthering their interest in this profession as they move forward with Nhongo Safaris.
